Healthy Environments And Response to Trauma in Schools (HEARTS) is a program originally created and researched by the University of California San Francisco to address the need for trauma-informed care and practice in the schools. Our Community Partner, Aurora Mental Health Center (AuMHC), has created a specific HEARTS training which is designed to promote academic and behavioral success in schools by addressing the barriers which trauma experienced by kids can cause.
When school staff attends a HEARTS training, they also learn the impact that trauma has on the child's developing brain, learning, and ability to form and maintain relationships. Successful completion of this training has impact on implementing trauma sensitive practices in classrooms, highlighting the importance of self-care for adults who work with children who have been traumatized, and having an overall changed perspective of the students in classrooms.
